About

About me

Well my name is Martin van Stein and I live in a little coastal village near Amsterdam called Ijmuiden, which is placed at a little spot on this globe called the Netherlands.
I actually started my career working as a carpenter, which I have thoroughly enjoyed for about 8-10 year.
During the evenings I attended an education which in the Netherlands is called MTS+ ( which is a secondary technical school)and during this course I had to build a kitchen in 3D……in Autocad, which turned out to be quite a pain in the…well you figure it out.
So I searched the internet for other software in which to build the kitchen and to make a long story short, I found a little package called Maya.
Over the years I kept learning more about Maya and 3D in general and eventually signed up for a 3d course at AVA studios which is based in Hilversum the Netherlands and it took of from there.
In my sparetime I can be found on fora around the net on which I give and get a lot of usefull advice, these are the fora where I can be found on a regular basis:

About work

At a certain point in time I decided that I didn’t want to be a carpenter for the rest of my life and started to explore the possibility of making a living in 3D, realising that it was probably hard to downright impossible to get the proverbial foot in the door in the industry especially since I had no knowledge of the industry and didn’t know any people who worked there ( it’s not what you know, but who you know ).
So I searched for an ” intermediate” solution and eventually stumbled upon a job offering from a company called Socrates, which is a company that sells software to the Dutch visual effects industry and decided to contact them and got the job.
I started around October 2007 as a support employee and gradually extended to sales and setting up and running a trainingcentre which is doing reasonably well, especially considering 2010 wasn’t the best year for the market we serve.
The people at work are all nice people from different agegroups and walks of life which makes it a colorful bunch to work with.

About the future

Needless to say it’s impossible to predict the future, especially since someone stole my crystal ball a while ago, but there is a wishlist as to what I want to accomplish:
-Be a part of making a “A list” movie
-Involved in making a game, there are actually some titles I would like to take a part in:

  • Thief 4
  • Knights of the old republic 3

Although I would consider it an honor to be even contemplated as an employee by ILM, Pixar, Dreamworks or any other ” big” name that’s out there, it’s not my goal to work at such a company , instead my goal is to work at a company where I can be of value, where I can learn a lot and work on stuff that will be here long after I am gone, like the buildings/homes I used to help build.

Conclusion

Well since you already made it through down to this page I might as well give you a link to my resume,
